Within a few months of coming to power the Prime Minister said that Buddhism must be taught in Jaffna by priests brought from India. Many of us believe that there is no significant difference in the basic philosophies of various religions. While the Prime Minister is eager to shower MPs with perks too excessive with respect to the common people, his conscience is comfortable with Rs 730 as daily wage and ”line rooms” for the families of estate workers.

It appears that in spite of a reduction in many of the Rajapakse excesses, very few promises made by the new administration have come to fruition. And as Marisa de Silva surmises, “I think what this government has done most effectively is perfect the art of sophistication. What the Rajapaksa government did overtly and crudely, this Government does covertly and subtly ..”

Same old shutff slightly sanitized and repackaged, by the looks of it!
