Then the default position is
tribe – us/them, a hostility towards the unfamiliar or the unknown.” Barack Obama
Very shallow thinking and abysmally incorrect. The present “profound stress” of US was engineered by Donald Trump with the “us/them hostility. Why? He wants to be President. Donald has sharpened his ability to mislead people for his personal ends. Unfortunately the Donald creation cannot be reversed.History is full of Donalds. The “Rivers of blood” speech by Enoch Powell is another example.
At home: In late forties early fifties the then Ceylon was the envy of neighbors. The country as a whole was not under stress but some politicians were. SWRD Bandaranayake wanted to be the PM and started the “Sinhala Only in 24 hours” slogan. The stress started and rest is history.

“…………The Rajapaksas went down to an unexpected defeat due to many factors”
The defeat was expected because of a decade of visible corruption, nepotism and culture of impunity.

“……….. Contrary to the utterances of some ministers, the replacement of the Rajapaksa regime with the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe administration did not bring about good governance.”
Several politicians with corruption allegations all over from the previous regime are back in the new government.

Sad to note no mention of Minister Swaminathan’s metal houses for North & East reinforced by metal fencing at exorbitant *prices for the war-ravaged people(whose socio-economic-environemtnal space is nearly taken over by the armed forces) when the government is moving heaven and earth to get foreign investment in Sri Lanka = antithesis of GoodGovernance
When Sri Lanka is striving to attain SDGs don’t the cabinet ministers make decisions as a collective to achieve SDGs through collective action? How much part the Minister for Policy Planning and Economic Affairs, Minister of Finance, Minister of Sustainable Development, etc had in the decision to choose Mittal Metal for the construction(= socio-economic and environmental destruction in this case) of tens of thousands of houses in the N&E? Readers must be given the benefit of the following link for information(which is in the author’s words: citizenry willing to stand up for their rights):
