It’s probably my favourite novel.

After reading your article I realised Narayan had very cleverly issued the same criticisms.

He’s done it with a lot of subtlety. there’s descriptions of the servile flattery,
pretentious rules and pettiness among his followers, the religious
overtones, the politicians buying into the fad with ulterior
motives and ultimately the violence taken up by some followers. Those things didn’t strike me as much before, I just took them for granted as part of Ghandi’s movement.

they don’t detract from the story either. People in Sri lanka will be more familiar with Narayan through Malgudi. so i highly recommend having a read of it, it’s about a young man who goes into the Ghandi movement with the strict intention of seeking the affections of a young lady amongst Ghandi’s followers.
