The new President Maithripala Sirisena had to give an undertaking block a UN investigation into human rights abuses. This is exactly what the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa wanted and in this sense though he lost the election he won over UN.

The recent Jaffna rape case illustrates the governing styles of Maithripala and Mahinda. The Jaffna Police were so used to instructions from Colombo for everything. In this case they dawdled. The Jaffna people were used to being silenced often – brutally. This time they suddenly found their freedom to protest and they did. The new government showed understanding and promised fast tracking the case. What did Mahinda say? He saw terrorism. Unfortunately he will use such incidents as erosion of the fight against terrorism. Looks like the ethnic divide is back with a vengeance.

How discrete those(including the TNA) who worked hard for the success of the ”Common candidate” had to be to retrieve the country from the Rajapakses first:
”the minority vote came unconditionally to him, and what is more, the common opposition was careful to studiously avoid any reference whatsoever to the demands of the minorities let alone be seen to be promising anything to them, so as to ensure that sufficient numbers of the majority deserted Rajapaksa”.

This hard work and the people’s favourable reply should not be wasted at all. No other chance will ever come our way.

1.The Prime Minister has appointed himself the fifth Minister for Rligious Affairs and trying to preach religion to Hindus in the North while UN etities have meetings on how SDGs have to be taken forwrard. He is the official Minister for Public Policy and Economic Affairs. So he has separated the North from the South. Only Tamils can’t talk about separatism?

2.What are the individual Ministries doing? One would expect reconciliation to be the sumtotal of what each and every Ministry(there are about 80 Ministers ) does.

Ministry for Mass Media and Information did not report the President’s visit to the North on 23 March 2015 to return about 400 acres to the owners from the High Security Zone of about 6,000 acres. It hasn’t so far reported about how those who received the land are struggling:

President Sirisens’s good intentions are not reflected by the government:
