Anandi Sasitharan who had to face a crowd of several hundred Tamil mothers recently demanding to know what her husband had done with some 300 Tamil children abducted/stolen from their homes should be first to be made answer .

When IIGEP realized that the Attorney General who was leading evidence in the cases that the Udalagama Commission was inquiring into, appeared to be biased IIGEP took objection to the then A/G leading evidence. When the Government took up the position that the then A/G was in fact a neutral person, IIGEP sought the opinion of two eminent retired judges of the Supreme Court, the late Justice Mark Fernando and former Justice Wigneswaran, on the issue. Their considered opinion, citing judgements in earlier cases was that the A/G . was not an independent official. In spite of that the Government did not relent on its stand about the A/G. This was one of the key issues that eventually led to IIGEP aborting their mission.
The success of the Advisory Council therefore rests on the passion of its members to seek the truth on the issues on which they have been invited to advice. If, it is otherwise eventually the reputation of the personnel in the Advisory Council would get tarnished beyond repair.

It is also pertinent to read Bastians’s write up on this:
