Thank you. I agree with your second point Dr. Jayatilleka. This is why I say “Opposition parties will have to reform ideologically and collectively to capture the imagination of people and turn statistical probability into a real political reality” in my pièce de résistance. Nothing short of a multiparty rainbow alliance aided by new intelligentsia with the ability to capture the imagination of post war Sri Lankan society will be able to deconstruct and replace the blind cult of personality, panopticism and stagnation prevalent in our country today. However, even this will not be enough unless there is a split within the UPFA. Which leads me to my disagreement with your first point. To me, the fractures within our government deepen daily. Our President requires “nationalistic and religious ideological capital” reinforced by his alliance to galvanize his entire vote base. With the Mahinda Chinthanya betrayed nothing holds this alliance together except mutual political survival and this is not enough, as you can see when you turn on the TV or read the newspapers. Listen to what Weerawansa, Champika, Badurdeen, Hakeem, Vasudeva, Vitharana, DEW, Lokuge, Vidura, BBS, Basil, Chamal and Maithripala say these days, Alea iacta est……

However it is important to avoid or rectify two analytical errors or lacunae. one must not conflate the presidential, parliamentary and provincial elections. Firstly, the all-important presidential election is essentially a duel between candidates i.e. personalities– and it is likely that the incumbent is rather more popular than his government/governing coalition. Secondly, it is vital not to overlook or minimize the salience of the significant gap between the cumulative 42% for the Opposition and the 50.1% needed to win. Simple addition can be misleading.
