An ugly city with poor at center stage is not the image we call for. What’s done by the government should be appreciated. This article is a farce, period.

I agree with you completely Russ C. A social community based on a diversity of humans has been all but destroyed in the name of “growth”, “development”, and “progress”. The reality is that things are much worse today than they were twenty years ago in real human terms.

Many of my diaspora colleagues return from their annual pilgrimages to the island to sing the praises of the beautification of Colombo. They never stay there long enough to fully appreciate at what cost all this ‘development’ takes place. All they and the local elites boast of is the existence of McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken and skyscrapers – never mind the chaos it has created in the absence of any meaningful zoning laws – as Streets, Avenues and Lanes that once had a sense of community have been transformed to an unrecognizable maze of concrete where anyone with a sliver of a front yard has cashed in on the get-rich schemes of building developers.
I think Ms. Fernando ought to conduct a related study of the very important service provided by the Dhobi community to the middle and upper-middle classes of Colombo.
