Well said, however much one (from the 2009 victory) blows one’s own trumpet, the fact remains it would have been better for the long term well being of the country to have had a career diplomat instead of a pol.scientist turned diplomat running around like a bull in a china shop promising all and sundry everything under the sun.
Five years later, the country pays the price for such foolishness, when it could not keep those unrealistic promises.

One point that stands out is the ‘facts’ of the abuses against tamils are barely covered. The country needs common ‘facts’ of the war between the Tamils and Sinhalese state. For example, was there abuse in the internment camps? Who did it? Who should the go to jail? Once an investigation (into both sides) is complete and accountability and justice delivered then at least the whole country will have ‘facts’ that are commonly understood. Only then is there a common history which is the basis of a common future. We are a very far cry from that future right, with state (and complicit private) media writing its own wishful facts. If anything Sri Lanka is very much moving in the opposite direction.

Fine tuning our diplomatic skills to resonate with our visions and aspirations has become critical. We have to work with professional men and women trained in diplomacy who can make studied decisions instead of offering responses to placate politicians.

How true, not only in 2014 when we had a “monitor” running the show even way back in 2009 when SL “won” we had a political appointment calling the shots.
Why “SL” won was more down to the fact that the international community was relieved that the LTTE was gone and was willing to give SL regime to start afresh, coupled with the ample support India gave us( hoping that the regime will keep its promise of 13+), rather than to the diplomatic skills of our political appointments.
