###

Absolutely loved the performance last night, especially hearing how the process of how the writing took place and the manuscript came together. There was a wonderful sense of honesty and rawness which was obviously the result of the process. The high points for me from the letters were letter to the mother, to the principal and letter to siddhartha. The last for me is surprising as this is the first time in my life I found myself relating to any writing on Buddhism! The acting in letter to the principal was fantastic.

I thought the same as Shanuki and Ravi (on your FB event wall) with regard to the slightly jaded message coming across. For me, I left wishing that there had been at least one piece on the joy of being a mother. Humour was used extremely effectively to lighten the pieces which had really captured the changes and challenges of motherhood but something on the positive side of motherhood would be a great inclusion to the production. I felt overall last night bordered on self indulgent which I think could be avoided with a positive piece?

The translations of the writing were fantastic. Most of the pieces I couldn’t even figure out which one would have been the original. Reading them in both languages and in some pieces, the repetition in both languages really worked well for me.

I initally thought this would be a straightforward reading, so what I saw last night I thought was fantastic. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed and appreciated seeing how you had put the performance together when it could have easily been a very linear one.The creativity of the tasks was brought out well in how you had put last nights performance together.

Didn’t really like the last scene with everyone sitting around though. We know that mothers’ interest extend beyond their kids and that they are informed and can talk about serious thing but somehow because it was mainly a few sentences it lacked a little depth. The scene with the lists, however was the opposite. Even thought it was few sentences it was meaningful and and conveyed a deeper message about the individual who is not just a mother.

Most of us were also wondering why Hasini, who from what we were told wasn’t part of the writing process also acted last night? The idea of mothers reading/acting the work of other mothers and who were all part of the same process of how the manuscript came to life is really wonderful and I feel that having actors read from this manuscript takes away from the overall idea and concept.

The inclusion of Prasad and Pasan really complemented the reading last night. The Sinhala theatre actresses really stood out and were really in a league of their own, especially Kaushalya, Nadie and Malkanthi.

Can’t wait for the show in September.
