It is a long time since he made any credible statement worth taking note of. He is internationally reputed for making such false statements. It is only the gullibles within Sri Lanka who accept such statements. He has never spoken like a statesman at any such occasion.

The last statement of the President quoted in this article about his not going to remove any of the military camps for fear of the attempts of the Tamil diaspora to win Tamil Eelam, means that the country is going to be saddled with a high cost of maintaining the army at the present strength, for a long time to come. Can the economy of our country bear such a cost ? For a person who was able to defeat a formidable enemy with military might at such a cost to lives and property, it should be child’s play to bring about the promised genuine reconciliation and effect a political solution that would enable the Tamils in the North and East to mind their own affairs and to live as truly equal citizens within a united Sri Lanka.

Why he is still juggling with words and methods to bring this about is because he does not have the will to do so. If he has the will he certainly can cross all the hurdles and make this expectation a reality. If he does so there would be no need for a heavy military presence in the north or the fear of a demand for a Tamil Eelam. If the Tamils living in the country can genuinely live without any fear of discrimination or harassment and as truly equal citizens who are allowed to manage the affairs of the areas where they live , without any interference , who will be there to support a call for Tamil Eelam, be it by the diaspora or by any one else ? History shows that a race of people or a community cannot be kept under subjugation for long with military might. Is our President so naïve as not to understand this basic fact of history ?
