This kind of report is eye-opening and thought-provoking without being needlessly inflammatory. I do hope it is translated into Sinhala.

That paper covers a lot of the same information as this article, but with more analysis of the legal framework.

There is also another very interesting paper currently on that website on freedom of expression/media written by one of my colleagues. More papers stemming from this research trip may be added in the coming weeks.

Mainstream thinking lead us to believe that notions of nationalist culture are home grown and that it can be traced back to persons like Dutthagamani, Keppetipola, Lord Buddha and the guardian deities.

What does mainstream thinking say instead?

Henry Steel Olcott (and his Russian ariosophist friend). I hope you will interpret this as nothing more than a clever revolt against mainstream thinking.

Who was the father of modern Sri Lankan culture?

And if you know anything about Sri Lanka you would know that the tactics used on the Tamils were already used on the Sinhalese over 20 years ago.

Simon,

What’s the fuss with the culture? In the prologue to the article, Calleigh establishes that she is from Virginia. The father of modern Sri Lankan culture was born in New Jersey, which is not that far from Viginia.

By the way, Calleigh is a woman’s name. Which culture are you from Simon?

The fact remains that all Sinhala governments signed peace deals with the LTTE treating them as defacto government and openly declaring that there will not be a military solutions to a purely political problem of the Tamils. After all the Tamils also gained independence from colonialism like the Sinhalese. If so how can the Sinhalese claim supremacy over the Tamils and deny their political rights of self determination. Vested interest like US and India and China clearly transgressed Human Rights and scorched the Tamil’s homeland for geo-political benefits. Now researchers like Calleigh McRaith are picking up the pieces and doing research forgetting the main cause of Tamil’s life destruction. However, it is a useful finding of those who were subjected to injustice. If not for this study the woes of the affected will not come out.
I had been writing all the time that more journalists should be allowed into the Tamil’s homeland to bring out the horror heaped on the Tamil population by the international community that should have taken the bold step to nib the war in the bud. The final solution to find the truth is to set up an international inquiry into the war crimes and to give self government to Tamils. Researchers like Calleigh McRaith should recommend it in her final report.
