Isn’t there another trend to make “independent” (ie antigovt) investigations and devolution the solution to all problems as well?

Dear georgethebushpig;

It is true that there’s a worrying trend that seeks to make the military the solution to all our problems. Now the terrorism is over the military should gradually give way to the proper civil authorities to run the affairs of the country. There are more specialized, competent and appropriate authorities to run different affairs in this country.

However, with the success of military in the war, an idea that the military as a target achiever established among the people. To say honestly, there was no any authority or organization in the recent past showed such an achievement. So, it is natural to to spread an idea that they are capable than others and military to get an acceptance than others. In a way this is not incorrect. Military can share their experiences with others even though they belong to civil society. Some countries too wanted to learn the military experience of war from us. Therefore one cannot totally deny and say military should never touched with civil affairs. However, excessive involvement of military in every nook and corner cannot be accepted as healthy a healthy sign. While what can be gained from military experience for the progress of the country, it is mandatory the military to confine to the affairs they are specialized of, through a rapid process.

Thanks!

Let’s not blur the lines. The military is there to defend the country against aggression. Leave the teaching to those competent in that area. I don’t think anyone would argue that the Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education should have led the war against the LTTE now would they?

Thanks! Yes I agree with what you have mentioned in your comment. Students who took part in this training that there is nothing wrong with the concept but they don’t agree with the way it was implemented. The fact that a special programme like this undermines the orientation programmes in universities and by doing so the Ministry of Higher Education acknowledged the incompetence of universities and schools in building leadership skills, personality development and soft skills. The programme to a certain extent might address these issues, but without providing a favorable academic environment in universities one cannot fully solve these issues.

This training will be followed by another training on English and IT skills and the duration of that training will be three weeks, which is not sufficient for students to master the subjects. When I was studying in the Arts faculty at the University of Sri Jayawardanapura from 2007-2010, I came across a lot of students who were very weak in their English. There were students who couldn’t read or pronounce the word “China”. The lack of knowledge on the language has resulted in students developing inferior complexes. At the same time, one cannot put the blame on these students, because there is a dearth of qualified English teachers in most of the schools in the country, especially at outstation schools.

Therefore, its important to address these issues through primary and secondary education level. The Government should invest more to provide resources and funds to develop primary and secondary education.

It appears that the Ministry of Higher Education has spent over 200 million on this programme. But the same government is reluctant to increase the pay of university teachers and also to develop infrastructure facilities in universities.

In my opinion, without addressing the core issues of the education system, it is difficult to expect success from this programme.

I am really reiterating a few things he said there.

Einstein said that education is what you are left with when you forget everything you learnt at school. The concept of cramming things into half baked heads is rather outdated – all over the world.

In 3 European countries – I think Finland, Denmark and Netherlands children dont start academic work until they are 8 years old. They just play and learn their social and emotional skills. When they reach 8 years their minds are ready for academic learning. We are still very much in the Dickensian age – facts,facts,facts.

I have also heard by the way that our military training is far more advanced than our police training and that they focus strongly on character building.

Even indoctrination has to be done properly and I doubt that whoever was interested in it had got their act together. this does not mean that this system cannot be abused in future.

What makes people free and what gets them really thinking is silence. That is why our Buddhist priests will never allow silence on poya days!!
