Then we have Prof Roberts who calls himself thuppahi – a very brave move. I myself am a city born – city educated person with no real links to the villages of my ancestors.

Its all ab how we identify ourselves. There is an assumption that having village roots means you are rooted, and that being a city liver means you have no roots. all these are broad generalizations without substance.

Peter Ustinov said that he was not interested in being rooted in anything except human values

If we want to move on as a nation we need to look very openly and broadly at these identities and look for the riches and substance as well as dirt that lies within

“gamaya” is the neutral term for villager.
