A section of the public is also responsible for the state of affairs as they stand right now. It is not only the politicians who are to blame. This section of the public which is supportive of the Government is opposed to reconciliation with the Tamil community. There are two reasons for this. One reason is that the LTTE is now defeated and the second reason is Sinhala racism.

The Government is well aware of this radical segment in the population and therefore is reluctant to take the path of reconciliation because if it does then it will lose a substancial section of its vote bank.

If the public wanted economic prosperity then it would have voted for the UNF and not the UPFA. The UPFA in the past has never delivered economic prosperity on the scale that the UNP/UNF did.
The public voted for the UPFA a second time because they were able to finish off the LTTE militarily and not because they trust the UPFA to deliver the economic goods.
