With Lasantha forgotten and Tissa released, they need a persecuted hero figure to rally around, and Prageeth fits the role.

The likes of Prageeth were being used primarily to influence the Sinhala vote. The presidential elections have shown that the puppets and the puppet-masters have been resoundingly unsuccessful in this endeavour. The Sinhalese – Prageeth’s target audience – have overwhelmingly voted against what he represented.

There is no real dissent in Sri Lanka for the government to crack down on. What can be seen is an artificially manufactured campaign against the government. The government gains nothing by allowing this perception of oppression and lawlessness to continue by abducting an unknown cartoonist who makes absolutely no impact. It’s the anti-national forces that benefit from it. Once Prageeth is forgotten or turns up alive and unharmed somewhere, they will find someone else to fight for. Does someone have the statistics on how many of these “white van” victims have subsequently claimed asylum in Western countries?

Prageeth’s outlandish allegations of electoral malpractices are simply not true. They haven’t even included them in the opposition’s petition. Nevertheless, his convenient disappearance gives weight to these allegations in the eyes of poorly informed international observers. Who benefits from this? Answer that question, and you will have your “abductors”.

Reading it took me back down memory lane of Richard De Zoysa and the wonderful half day he spent with us at a drama workshop at Peradeniya. RDZ was so many years ago… “have we evolved?”, is a question we are entitled to ask in despair. That alone won’t help us. The more challenging question is how we can work with the present administration to make the situation better?

No one dared speak of it back then, let alone publish. Some of my most clear memories are of Andiri Neethiya. The same folk cry foul of media freedom these days used to run torture houses. On my way to school, when I could smell burnt out rubber, I used to wonder if he was under one of those piles. Either way he probably wasn’t a saint either so this not about missing my uncle, but I haven’t forgotten the past and I appreciate where we are today. It’s sunshine compared to those dark ages.

Wasn’t this part of a grand plan of SWAN alliance to discredit the government during the Prezi elections? Duhh..

He knows where to buy the bullets, where to buy the ships and aircraft, who pays the best commission. He had followed closely the careers of many men who made it to the top in the last ventury. He made friends in the overseas non gov sector and the ambassodors, doers and shakers of the world shock exchanges, who knew a thing or two about what matters in the military as well as political world. He also knows who are the guys he can depend on and where the the assets are held.

. Alas, there are things that still do not go to plan, his party is still low on public speaking ability, nasty journos on the other side make mincemeat of his leader.

One day he would be the cheif advisor and keep the Chief in a stern grip.
