Sorry to inform you this. Now that Phillip Alston has demanded an independent war crimes investigation, you can forget SF winning the elections. I am now ready to place my bets.

It is hard to talk ill of the dead, but as a journo there was no quality in him.

The MR brothers have proven to be what they are [edited out]. It is time to get rid of this [edited out] brothers once and for all. They should not even be allowed to sit in parliament as opposition members.

Having said that, I must say that I did not like Lasantha’s style of journalism. To me it was mostly gutter stuff and irresponsible publishing. I read his editorial on the 4th of Jan 2009 during the height of the war against the LTTE, and was taken aback by the stupidity of it all. The country was at war with a brutal terrorist group and Lasantha was writing against it. We can disagree with the war and the horrors it brings about, but when a terrorist group had been suffocating a whole country with violence and murder and had been spurning so many peace offers by the govt for so many years, war it must be to free the country.
People die, people suffer during wars, but to attack the army at that time was stupid and totally ill-timed. I do not think Lasantha was a great journalist. Most things he published, prying into the personal lives of public people (like former president Kumaratunga) were downright vulgar and repulsive. Let’s not talk about the irresponsibility shown in his own personal life.
I think that Lasantha was a great big humbug, but of course that was no reason to kill a person.

Let us show them that we will not tolerate them any longer!
