The paper has the benefit of being an object, and so can be more beautiful than online news. What would you say to his efforts?

By rushing to condemn Big Media, you have forgotten that the basic tenet that ‘media’ is a plural term and that media by its very nature are meant to provide a contested and contentious space. It’s a market place of ideas and counter-ideas. Media pluralism is achieved by accommodating the widest possible range of opinions, not just those that hold personally dear.

I don’t defend press barons or media moguls, but at the same time, I don’t believe in throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The over-romanticised community media cannot, at this time and level of technology, fully replace the commercially operated mainstream media. So why not harness ALL types of media in the public interest? That’s the simple, overarching point I’m making in my essay.

For a good discussion on media bias and objectivity, read this op ed essay by Rohan Samarajiva titled ‘Fair or Bias’, written in January 2009 in honor of the slain journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge. Here’s an excerpt:

“When newspapers strive to reach the largest possible readership and deliver the greatest value to their advertisers, they seek to present a balance. The New York Times carries columns by Bob Herbert and Paul Krugman from the Left and David Brooks and William Kristol from the Right. But most people know the Times is liberal. If you really want conservative, you’d read the Wall Street Journal, or watch Fox News.

“The realistic objective is an overall media environment made up of multiple news products with different biases. The balance is in the environment, not in the individual channels or newspapers…”

Well, if he lifts his head buried in the sand and watches a bit of Fox News or reads what trash and venom Murdoch Mill passes for journalism, he would think twice. Big media has ruled the roost for far too long, and their demise comes not a moment too soon. Lets rejoice the decline and death of big media everywhere, no exceptions please!

The way it used to be and the way it is and will be, will be all our doing…. Let the likes of your daughter Dhara decide what that future will be…. We must ensure that they have the space left for them to make those decisions … So it is not about being digital … it is about being human and humane and protecting mother earth with less and less greed ….

So what good is this article, another piece of nostalgia by someone who refuses to change with the times?

Nalaka you make me smile as I am 59 this week and I remember the pre wired days. In 1979 I saved every penny as I was just a white collar cog in a corporate machine. I bought the first (that I know of) Personnal computer by Comodore called a Pet. It used a series of tape drives but it could be taken home and sit on your table in the living room…and it did something amazing…it could play a great game of black and white chess. People in my apartment building would come to view like the first television I imagine. It bosted a huge memory 4K. I am not sure how small that is …but it is very small.
So in my sons eyes….(who is 27 now) He knows I was the first among my friends to have my very own computer…and it only weighed about 50 lbs.
Thank you Nalaka for reminding me of the way it was. Oh and that little computer back then cost me 3500.00 about half a years salary….and worth every penny….
