Just to look into personal gains and gain nothing for their people.

Have the Muslims or the upcountry Tamils gained anything whatsoever under any government just because there is an Ashroff or Thondaman in parliament? No.

Puppetry is what the writer is promoting. The real issues need to be addressed.
We do have a war because of such past and present political puppetry.

"Now that the armed conflict of the LTTE is supposed to be approaching its end, it behoves those concerned with the future of the Tamils in Sri Lanka, to reflect seriously on the options available to redeem their future."

This statement seem to be a popular refrain among the media and some civil society commentators these days. A realistic assumption would be that the armed conflict will continue in one form or other unless a ceasefire and talks between the warring parties take place under the guidance of the UN. The Co-Chairs by their actions in recent times have virtually ruled themselves out.

"To begin with, leading lights of the Diaspora should follow up the lead given by the President in his Independence Day address calling for the return of expatriate Tamils. They should seek a dialogue with him with a view to laying down a foundation that would lead to the final emancipation of their people."

Do you really think that the Tamil diaspora listen to Pres MR's calls. You can neutralise the influence of the Tamil diaspora if you ask the GoSL to put the 'Implementation of the 13th Amendment", and a "two-state solution" to a referendum of the Tamil people, and the rest of the citizens of Sri Lanka and count their verdict separately. If both the Tamil people and the rest of the people accept the "Implementation of the 13th amendment" by a simple majority, then the Tamil diaspora has no more say on the matter. If the Tamil people vote for separation, then Tamil diaspora and the IC will have a lot to say. Naturally such a referendum should be under the guidance of the UN. This is my call to President Rajapakse and to you. If the GoSL and the Sinhala people believe that the Tamil people living in Sri Lanka do not want a separate state, the referendum is a sure way to find out.
