I don’t think willful killing of civilians can be termed collateral damage — the term refers to accidental death and damage.

“I can’t see why accountability of the military cannot be incompatible with fostering a society that rejects war.”

Sam, I didn’t say it wasn’t compatible. However, accountability only comes with a morality.

“In recent times only Pol Pot who was a diabetic died in his sleep at the age of 65.”

Chinthana Mahinda, you’re forgetting Idi Amin, Mengel, Stalin, and many others.

“either claymore, kafir or Mig bomb the daylights out of them!”

Wow, next time I’ll save myself the trouble of spending hours on an article, and send you the headline. Thanks.

Prabahakaran, Mahinda and Gotabaya will get what they deserve one day. In recent times only Pol Pot who was a diabetic died in his sleep at the age of 65.
Until then, it’s open season on the Tamils. Oh! What a country!

Take a look at some of the responses that Daily Mirror’s news items get on their website. Online forums seem to be going the same way as radio talk-back.

Of course there’s a need to ensure greater accountability of the armed forces. Like there’s a need to ensure greater accountability of politicians and NGOs. I can’t see why accountability of the military cannot be incompatible with fostering a society that rejects war.

I reckon killing civilians or leading the women and children “a little less” is done because the people doing the killing reckons there’s a get away. And I am sure we hear only a fraction of so-called ‘collateral damage’.

Perhaps people who understand the psyche of the armed forces should do more to ensure war isn’t perceived as a game, and those who participate in massacres are brought to justice – or at least the truth exposed. And I strongly believe this has to be done in the public domain – not by some secret military police.

i think this issue – where civilians get killed – doesnt it fall under collateral damage? personally believe that the sniper / who ever was at risk of kill or be killed should be given the choice , as collateral damage is enevitable in a war.
