A culture of pork barrel ministries encourage Ministers to play musical chairs in the cabinet. This combined with the fact that the opposition and incumbent parties have few ideological differences (besides differing on principle) makes any party prone to these crossovers. Its just a case of the elephants heading to wherever there is more food and water.

This is why I respect the JVP’s anger over the crossovers. They have always strived to make sure that everyone in Sri Lanka, even politicians, live in abject misery and poverty. Lenin would be proud.

However, twoconcerns must be raised. Firstly, the modus operendi in extracting the figures are not detailed. Therefore, the conclusions directlt drawn from the facts are doubtful. Secondly, The independence of individual MPs are a cherished democratic ideal. Their motives maybedoubtful.
