But you cannot build this in a vacuum. This has to go hand in hand with other reforms. Having been educated in schools in Australia and Sri Lanka, I noticed a greater emphasis is placed in Australia on language analysis and critical thinking especially at the high school level. Take for instance the teaching of history. The Mahavamsa, has been the unquestioned, historical source used to teach both Sinhala and Thamil children Sri Lankan history for quite some time. Australia currently follows the modern trend in history education which is less about learning facts and more about critically analysing available data and records and making a wide range of information sources available to children. The current government in Australia is trying to reverse this trend back to the traditional approach to teaching history. Prime Minister John Howard, is also critical about the “black arm band view” of Australian history which refers in detail to the attrocities commited against the Aboriginal population etc. Currently, high school children don’t just learn the date that Captain Cook landed in Australia, but also the implications behind that. Clearly politicians in all nations recognise that manipulation of the education system, especially in areas such as history, gives them the power to push a particular political agenda.
