Rally calling for the immediate release Sarath Fonseka: Video and photos

The JVP organised a massive rally in Colombo on 11 October calling for the release of Sarath Fonseka from prison. Eye-witness accounts suggest over 3,000 people were part of this rally in the heart of Colombo, which took place in front of the prison where Sarath Fonseka is incarcerated. No violence was recorded.

Mainstream print and electronic media coverage of this rally was abysmal in Sri Lanka, suggesting a very high degree of self-censorship on this issue, driven by fear of hate and harm directed against journalists perceived by government to be partial to Sarath Fonseka.

  1. i do beleive fonseka is no democrat.it is good for s.l. and specially for the minorities that this army man did not become the president .jvp, the national socialist, talking about democracy, what a joke.i feel very sorry for this old trotzky,dr.vicramabahu.unp eers do not make the unp,a idiotic party.get rid of your leader. ranjit de mel berlin/colombo

  2. to uphold certain democratic principles, Sarath Fonseka must be released.

But do (not) these protestors knwo that the detainees in camps and returnees in villages in the Northeast are denied help from aid agents when they desperately need drinking water, food and a roof over their heads and above all physical protection from the army raping women not only in their shelters but even in public places?

It’s the protest of Sinhalese masses that can salvage those trapped in the Northeast:

  3. Hey, grant an amnesty and set him free before the whole country explode against the warped judgment. None could stop masses exercising their constitutional right of peaceful protest. We are encouraged by the bubbling activism in Sri Lanka. Vijay went in, SB went in and the country kept silent. See what is happening now. SF is the most high profiled man Welikada ever got. Until he is released the govt., won’t have peace.

  4. DEAR ALL, I LIVE ABROAD. HERE YOU MAY BE THE QUEEN, THE PRINCE OR PRINCESS, BUT IF YOU DO SOMETHING WRONG, THE POLICE WIL WITHOUT FEAR OR FAVOUR TREAR YOU JUST THE SAME AS A HOBO !! IT IS SUCH A VERY VERY GREAT PITY THAT WE DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE THIS SITUATION IN SL. THE SITUATION HAS GOT 2000 TIMES WORSE IN THE RECENT PAST.
THERE WILL BE LOTS OF EXPATRIATS IN SL IN DECEMBER. I AM SURE THAT LOTS OF US WILL PARTAKE IN A MARCH FOR
DEMOCRACY IF ONE IS ORGANISED THEN.
PLEASE PLEASE DO US A FAVOUR AND ORGANISE A MARCH THEN !!!

  5. Question is NOT whether Sarth Fonseka is GUILTY or NOT.

It is to do with RULE OF LAW.

If the president can appoint judges that have had some unpleasent dealings with the accused who they are judging then that system is NOT:

transparent or fair….>>> YES . If he is guilty no doubt put him in jail. But due process has to be followed in a democracy to come to that judgement.

As someone correctly said Sarath Fonseka was no democrat.

But things that I can not figure out still is that:
Why would someone be having allainces with people that criticised you when you were the army commander ? eg: UNP and the TNA.

JVP understandable. THose that supported Fonseka as commander and wept when he was attacked were Sinhala-Buddhists. BUT he did not take his case to the Sinhala-Buddhists in the election. His supporters SHOULD have been the very supporters of Mahinda Rajapakse BUT Fonseka did not appeal to them instead went behind UNP, TNA and the JVP.

He did not appear to be the independent candidate which he rightly should have BUT appeared as the common opposition candidate to which he had no real backing from any party. So the poor fellow got done for nothing for his political naivity or bad advice.

  6. Hubble brings the multiverese to our view. Submercibles uncover new species in the deep oceans. Now to the relief of all human beings Chilean miners are being rescued. But man a mechanism to keep sections of citizens oppressed under internal colonialism behind a shield of ”sovereignty”.

  7. Dr.Siva first march for justice in December then march for democracy in March. if you survive. There is no democracy without justice. Thousands were denied justice but they cant march in March or in any month for that matter When they were denied justice were you marching or what ? . Keep marching machans . It is Sri Lanka. When you march please make sure you carry a LIEon flag.

  8. Asumption is the mother of all ………
    General showed democratic credentials
If military rule was his aim he would have siezed control militarilly
With him SL got a chance for somthing fresh; administrator over politcos
Politicos are the cause for SL mess
I he had retreated/dissarmed/dissmantelled we would not have footing in the Nth-east for an eelam war !V
Was he given the task we would hve achieved freedom over a decade ago
The amount of lives and property that could have been saved is only known to the Gods!

  9. Ha…ha…just read in lankanewsweb that Dayan Jayathileka is to be appointed as ambassador to France and Asitha Perera to be appointed as ambassador to Italy.

No wonder The Yarn sings hosannas at the top of his voice to the Paksha Family!

Lankanewsweb has been blocked by the government. You will have to use a proxy site to browse.

  10. Presiduncebean,

I am also seeing this about the doctor the yarn. Maybe I will also be getting to go abroad to tell internatonal comoonity about the president and his family. I am also like puppy to president. And I am doctor also.

  11. Dear Dr. Mevyn Silva…can you remember a popular TV programme in the 1980s called “Dr. WHO?”
“Dr” The Yarn on the other hand is more like a “Dr. HOO” no? The The Yarns of this world will write anything or say anything for a mess of pottage!
    Sad situation.

  12. this is exactly what i expected from this so called Doctor yarn , he was desperate to hang on to another high profile post , as he was barking high from both ends , your low level tactic’s did work out and was handsomely paid off, as anticipated, is not it Dr yarn ?
