Disappearences of all forms have taken its place on its routine regardless of being you are a tamil, sinhala, muslim or burgher today. Even if MR himself has been the defence minister of his govt, he seems to be showing a half hearted reaction to any abductions. For a leader who got re electected for the country by stealing the people´s franchise, these sorta of human rights violations cannot be hearted issues, even if the rest of those family members continuously ask for help to find abducted ones. How can we all live in a society where all these abductons have been occuring as to a manner that we could never see it in the past ? is the question that many feel today.

One has to look at these stories with a degree of detachment. Few years ago I read the story of a Colombo three wheeler driver / owner who had donated a luxury car to the present leader of the opposition in Sri Lanka and disappeared. Opposition cried foul and shortly afterwards, the man surfaced and apparently he had been spending time with his brother ln his home village without informing his wife.

One has to go back to the days of Pilimathalawwe, Puran Appu, Bracegirdle, Rhoda Miller de Silva to get the correct perspective on the complex question of media freedom and the rights of vested interests and the punishments meted out to dissidents. Media is not necessarily free though pencils and paper are almost free. We have seen in US how the career of Orson Wells came to an end with the production of his unrivaled masterpiece Citizen Kane when he was a very young man. For everything else he produced since he had to work under extremely close supervision with originals frequently disappearing due to strange reasons.

Sarwan is correct.
Even now, after the war is over, tamils are disappearing, found dead, girls raped, hundreds/thousands held in detention without indictment, fishermen not allowed to fish, army collects "kappan" from lorries of tamils on A9, tamil journalists prevented from visiting nothern areas though they have accreditation, thousands have no identity documents, those about to go abroad with required documents & visas arrested at the airport, those visiting southern areas being arrested without any reason, most tamil shops in the north annexed illegally by sinhala traders during the war,
Tamils harassed at all junctions, roads & on their way to worship, statues in hindu temples robbed, buddha statues planted provocatively even close to places of christian & hindu worship etc.etc.
The sinhalese are now tasting the oppression and repression visited on tamils up to now.
