We also need basic industry to flourish. We are trying too hard to move into a service oriented economy without going through the much needed dredgery of a robust manufacturing (or processing) oriented economy. Our agriculture sector sticks out like a sore thumb. So does our fisheries sector. Our farmers and fishermen are among the poorest people in the country. This doesn't have to be the case at all. Developed countries became so only by getting their fundamentals right. Farmers in the US are well off. the Japanese fishing industry pays well.

Its my personal opinion that climate change should concern us all that much. It is a constraint to development. Also, the negative impact we would cause is negligible to the vast impact our immediate neighbors have. They incidentally, found a disregard for the environment essential to improve their industry. They wouldn't be where they are today if they paid close attention to the environment. If you want development the environment will have to be ignored for a while. Sad truth indeed. Good post. A serious economic vision is something that is majorly lacking in our governance framework.
