With the death of Neelan Thiruchelvam, ICES is finding it difficult to procure funds for its coterie of thinktanks including Darini.

The drivel being written and the amount of money spent on paying for their reams of notes could be better spent on humanitarian aid for the suffering civilians.

These pseudo-intellectuals are paid on word count in US dollars or Sterling pounds so they have to use `paradigm' and `polity' in their dissertations plus the usual instead of `could you child come to play in my house' becomes 'could your offspring enter my abode for the purpose of recreation'.

How else could they survive in Colombo7, 3 and 5 and the circuit of DPL dinners and cocktails.

Freebies is their exclusive preroragative.

Taraki Sivaram is a victim as well as a murderer. Taraki is the one personally shot 2 PLOTE dissidents Ahilan ( Former Denstry student from Peradenia University) and Selvam( Source: http://www.uthr.org/SpecialReports/spreport19ptII.htm#Who). This information is deliberately ommitted by the author Whitaker which is an intellectual fraud.

One week prior to the assassination, Sivaram addressed an audience full of Sinhala nationalist youth and academia. His so refined intellectual analysis combined with such an uncommon humbleness opened a discourse that went passing the wee hours. That night Siva Anna was more powerful than the waves of the Indian Ocean near Kaluthara. He planted the seeds of a genuine search in many minds otherwise would have been drawing in the ugly ocean of extreme form of Sinhala (or Thamil) nationalism. If the life and work of Siva Anna are to achieve their real meaning, the assassins of this brilliant mind and joyful spirit should be brought to democratic accountability.

Mark Whitaker would never acknowledge this, and indeed he never aimed for his work in this book to revolutionize anthropology. But it has. Sivaram would be laughing right now if he read these words by me. I just hope he is laughing right now, that deep laugh of the ocean, of ages and ages past, that he had. I also hope just as much that many, many more people read this book, and understand the importance of it.

And thanks to Darshini Rajasingham Senanayake for this outstanding, insightful review.
