The killing of journalists and the Media Minister’s comments

My article published in Vikalpa, in Sinhala, deals with this government’s deplorable record of securing and strengthening media freedom in Sri Lanka in2007. My immediate response is to the Media Minister’s contestation of the recent PEC report that ranked Sri Lanka as the world’s 3rd most dangerous place for journalists.

The Media Minister’s self-styled interpretation of journalists / journalism is pitifully blinkered and deliberately narrow. As I note, it is also an essentially inhumane stance as he, by extension, justifies the killings of media workers who do not fall under the Government’s definition of journalists. In this light, it is important to recognise that the Free Media Movement, along with four other leading trade unions and journalists organisations, recognised new media workers and bloggers as journalists as well.

මුද්රිත, විද්්යුත්, හෝ අන්තර් ජාල මාධ්ය හරහා වෘත්තියක් වශයෙන් තොරතුරු එකතු කිරීමෙහි, සංස්කරණය කිරිමෙහි සහ බෙදා හැරීමෙහි සංවිධිතව හෝ තනිව යෙදී සිටින ඹ්නෑම අයකු ජනමාධ්යවේදයට අයත් ය. එපමණක් නොව අනෙක් අයට ද බලා කියවිය හැකි පරිදි අන්තර් ජාලයෙහි සිය සමාජ දේශපාලන දින සටහන් ලියන බ්ලොග්කරුවන්ද මෙම නිර්වචනයට අසු නොවන ජනමාධ්යවේදීන් වේ. මියන්මාරයේ සිට ද වීනයේ සිටද ඉරාකයේ සිට ද ලොවට බෙහෝ වැගත් තොරතුරු ලැබෙන්නේ මෙම බ්ලොග්කරුවන් හරහා ය.

ජනමාධ්යයේ ප්රධාන වගකීම නිවැරදිබව, අපක්ෂාපතිත්වය සහ සාධාරණත්වය හැකිතාක් දුරට රැුක ගැනීමය. ඊට හානි වන පරිදි කැරෙන ජනමාධ්යයට අදාළ කවරකු හෝ ඝාතනයක කිරීම ජනමාධ්යවේදින් ඝාතනය කිරීම යන පොදු ව්යවහාරය තුළට ඇතුල් කෙරෙන්නේ එනිසා ය. අද ජගත් ව්යවහාරය එය යි.

I believe that anyone who writes in a manner that critically questions the status quo who adheres to impartial, accurate and professional reporting standards is today commonly and globally accepted and recognised as a journalist or media worker.

As I go on to note, what is more shameful than the Minister’s recent comments is this government’s actions, in a systematic and open manner and with complete impunity, to undermine media freedom and the safety and security of journalists.

කරුණු මෙසේ වුවත් වඩාම කණගාටුවට කාරණය මෙම හැදුනුම්පත බලා ජනමාධ්යවේදය තීරණය කරන අනුර ප්රියදර්ශන පිළිවෙත නොවේ. ජනමාධ්ය ඇමැතිවරයා වශයෙන් ඔහු දැක් වූ අමානුෂික ස්වභාවය යි. හැදුනුම්පත් නැත්නම් ඒ මරණ මට ප්රශ්නයක් නොවේ යන කටුක ඇගවීම යි.

අනෙක් අතට ජනමාධ්ය ඇමැතිවරයා පිළිතුරු දිය යුත්තේ පසුගිය වසර තුළ මෙරට ජනමාධ්ය මුහුණ දුන් සියළු ගර්ජන මර්දන තර්ජන සම්බන්ධයෙනි.

මව්බිම සහ ලීඩර් පුවත්පත් සමූහයට එරෙහිව මුදා හරින ලද අනේනානාර භීෂනයන්, ඒබීසී ගුවන් විදුලි ජාලය වසා දැමීම, කතුවරුන්ට එරෙහි තර්ජන ගර්ජන, අත්තාස් විරෝධි ආණ්ඩුවේ ව්යාපාරය, ප්රදේශිය ජනමාධ්යවේදින්ට එල්ලවන නිරන්තර තර්ජන ගර්ජන, රාජ්ය ජනමාධ්ය අගතිගගාමිත්වය, සහ ජනමාධ්ය නිදහස සඳහා අවශ්ය නීතිමය රාමුව ගැන ජනමාධ්ය ඇමැතිවරයාගේ නිහඩතාවය පුදුමාකාර ය.

වසර අවසාන වන්නට යන්නේ එම කිසිදු කි්රයාවක් අරභයා කිසිදු නීතිමය පියවරක් ගැනීමට ඔහුගේ ආණ්ඩුව අසමත් වූ තත්ත්වයක් යටතේය. ලැජ්ජාවට කාරණය එයයි.
